Super Heroic Minimalism (Part 1/4)
Author: Jonah Block
I thought this was really clever. If any of you guys are into the comic book superhero thing you might like it, too. ;)
My final project for a class that I very much despised. Love the portrait, but nothing I learned in that class contributed to how it looks now. The general look and feeling of the painting was developed with techniques that I discovered in another class. The flags are nothing special, one of the requirements of the assignment was to repeat a symbol in the background that “represents you” in some deep, original way. In other words make a pretentious, artsy statement about yourself.
I thought it was a silly idea and that the flags were actually quite distracting. So I painted them out. Unfortunately, I must admit that I’m not sure if I did that to make image better or just to spite my “teacher”. At any rate I’m quite pleased with it. Maybe I’ll do another one without the horns in the near-future.
The third image was an assignment for a Photoshop class. The theme of the assignment, “Beginner”, came from Illustrationfriday.com. Admittedly I had a hard time getting into this one. The theme was limiting and I’m still getting used to the feeling of Photoshop. Drawing on a Wacom is just weird in my opinion, and I don’t like. It just doesn’t give the same satisfaction as pressing pen to paper and feeling the grain of the paper through your drawing. The vehicle of the digital medium just throws me and I can’t get into it not matter how much I may want to.
Two more paintings. Completed these in class a few weeks ago, but I didn’t get them back from my teacher until recently. I’m a little bit frustrated with how the uploaded images look, but the capabilities of my current camera is quite limited. Hence there’s not much I can do about that.
Anyhow, enjoy! I hope to upload more samples of my work once finals week is over.
